Which Mattress Size Is Right For You?

There are six standard universal mattress sizes. A Queen mattress, for instance, will have the same dimensions no matter where you buy it. We offer five different mattress sizes, covering the most common options to match your comfort and room size perfectly to go with.

Size

Dimension

Best for

Twin

38" x 75

Solo sleepers, kids, teenagers, and limited space

53” x 75”

Adults with more space, solo sleepers who share with a pet

Queen

60” x 80”

Couples, master bedrooms, and those with smaller pets

King

76” x 80”

Couples who like to spread out or those who share the bed with pets and kids

California King

72” x 84”

Taller adults, those with larger rooms, and families with multiple pets

Twin Mattresses

Standard Dimensions: 38” x 75”

Best for: Solo sleepers, kids’ rooms, teens, and smaller bedrooms

Twin mattresses are the smallest and least expensive mattresses on the market. At just 38” wide and 75” long, they are ideal for solo sleepers, especially children, teens, or adults with limited space. Twins are easy to move, fit well into compact bedrooms, and are one of the easiest sizes to find bedding for.

Queen

Standard Dimensions: 60” x 80”

Best for: Couples, master bedrooms, and those who share with smaller pets

Queen mattresses are the most popular size on the market. They balance comfort and practicality for most sleepers, particularly couples and those with generous guest rooms. It’s a good upgrade for solo sleepers who sleep with pets and those who like to stretch out a bit.

King

Standard Dimensions: 76” x 80”

Best for: Couples who sprawl, those who share with kids and larger pets, and larger master bedrooms

The King mattress is built for couples who enjoy their own sleeping space, even if they both like to spread out. They are best in spacious master bedrooms because they take up a lot of floor space. Couples who share a bed with multiple kids and pets will enjoy this size, as they won’t feel crowded together when everyone is in bed.

California King

Standard Dimensions: 72” x 84”

Best for: Very spacious rooms, taller sleepers, and those who want a more generous sleep space

California King is the largest standard mattress size. Though it’s not as wide as a King, it is four inches longer. This makes it ideal for extremely tall sleepers and those with very spacious rooms. Regardless of how you share a bed, California King mattresses have a generous sleep surface.

The Best Mattress Size For You

With so many options, how can you choose the mattress size that is right for you?

There are a few factors you should keep in mind as you shop. For example, who is sleeping on the mattress? Will it fit in your bedroom? What does your budget look like?

The answers to these questions may lead you to the perfect mattress size.

  • Who Is Sleeping on the Bed?

The number of sleepers (including pets and children) is a big factor to consider when purchasing a mattress. As a general rule, the breakdown looks something like this:

    • Solo sleepers: Twin, Twin XL, Full/Double
    • Couples and bedsharing: Queen, King, California King

The size you need may change if you sleep with pets or kids, depending on their age or size. Keep in mind that mattresses are meant to last for 7 to 10 years, so consider how your needs might change over that time.

  • How Much Room Do You Have?

The size of your room is also a huge factor. A King bed isn’t practical for smaller rooms, for example. Likewise, solo sleepers with spacious bedrooms may want to choose a larger size to make the space look and feel more natural.

Do you share your bedroom? Dorm rooms and student housing options may have you sharing a sleeping space. You’ll need a smaller bed (usually a Twin or Twin XL) even if the room itself is larger.

  • What Is Your Body Type?

Your height and body type are key considerations, too. If you are tall, you may want to go with one of the taller mattress options (Twin XL or California King).

Heavier sleepers, especially couples, may need a larger bed to sleep comfortably. Heavier couples who like to stay separate as they sleep may prefer a King or California King instead of a Queen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these the only mattress sizes on the market?

No! There is a range of special and uncommon mattress sizes available on the market. They’re going to be much harder to find, though. Other options include a Super Single, RV Queen, Texas King, or Alaskan King. These special sizes are made for specific sleep surfaces or offer a much smaller or larger sleep surface than standard mattresses. Most mattress companies only keep the six standard sizes on hand for simplicity, and these special sizes may need to be ordered elsewhere.

Is a Double mattress the same as a Full mattress?

Yes–these terms are used interchangeably. Most mattress brands use ‘Full’ on their product pages, but you’re more likely to hear ‘Double’ in conversation.

Which mattress sizes are best for couples?

Couples can be comfortable on a Queen, King, or California King. Some couples, especially those who like to sleep close, may be able to sleep comfortably on a Full. However, Queen is the most popular mattress size for couples because it allows for some space without isolating you.

What’s the difference between a King and a California King?

A California King is four inches longer than a King, but it’s also four inches narrower. It’s ideal for sleepers who need more leg room, especially those who are much taller than average.

Which mattresses are easiest to find bedding for?

Twin and Queen sizes are the most widely available when it comes to sheets and accessories. Twin XL and California King sheets can be trickier to find, but many brands offer bedding options for all six standard sizes.
